VELLEESWARAR TEMPLE - SHUKRAN - MANGADU

 Velleeswarar Temple - Mangadu

Navagraha temple in Chennai – Shukran Parihara Kshetram.
Goddess Parvathi Playfully closed both the eyes of Lord Shiva and the world was surrounded by darkness. Shiva opened his third eye to give light. He punished Parvathi to be born as a woman on earth and pray to him for reunion to him. Kamakshi Devi did tapas to Lord Shiva in Mangadu.
During that period Shukran also prayed to lord Shiva to restore his eye, which he had lost, while stopping the Arghya(offering) being given by Mahabali to Mahavishnu in the form of Vamana. Shukracharya was the guru of the Asura’s and in order to prevent Mahabali from donating the three paces of Land to Vamana, he took the form of a bee and blocked the passage of water to flow from the Kamandalu. Vamana poked the mouth of the Kamandalu with a blade of grass, which pricked the eyes of Shukracharya and he became blind.
Kamakshi came to the temple and saw Shukra in great tapas, she did not want to disturb the Tapas of Shukra and left the temple. Lord Shiva directed Goddess Kamakshi to come to Kanchipuram and married her there.
The temple is older than the Kamakshi temple and is related to the medieval Cholas and could be as old as 2 to 3 thousand years. The temple is on a 2 acre plot and is 1.5 Kms away from the Kamakshi Amman temple in Mangadu. The lord is known as Velleswarar, Velli in Tamil means Shukra, or Friday, the day connected to the puja of Shukran. He is also known as Shukreeswarar and Bhargaveeshwarar. The Lord is facing East and is accessible through the South Entrance. The Lingam is 6 feet tall with a square Avudayar. A square Avudayar signifies the presence of Kamakshi as the presiding deity in the town. There is no separate shrine for Shukran.
There is no shrine for Parvathi, as she has a separate temple in Mangadu and is enshrined as Kamakshi.
The Temple has a Mukhadwaram without a Gopuram, as you enter through it you come to rectangular corridor, at the end of which is the Bali Peetham,Dhwaja Sthambam and Nandi Mandapam. The Nandi is looking at the lord from a Small peep hole in Gambhira Mudra. In between the Nandi and the Peep hole is the Padam of Kamakshi, which signifies the visit of the Goddess Kamakshi to the temple, But not disturbing Shukran’s tapas.
The Vinayaga moorthy holds paddy stalk in his left upper hand and a Mango in his lower hand and hence he is called Nel Kadir Vinayaka or Mangani Vinayaka.
The prahara has Vinayaga, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar ,Brahma,Vishnu & Durga graces this temple with a Chakra in her hand, being the sister of Vishnu. There is a separate shrine for Virabhadrar.
