BHOOTHAPURISHWARAR TEMPLE - SRIPERAMBUDUR - KANCHIPURAM - TAMILNADU.
.
In the holy town of the birth of Sri Ramanujam – a Vaishnava Perceptor & Saint, is the Temple of Mahadev Shiva in the form of a lingam named Sri Bhootapurishwarar along with his consort Devi Parvathi known as Sri Soundaryavalli.
Exactly 2KM’s from the Toll at Sriperumbudur, on a right turn, the temple is visible from roadside to anybody who is looking for it. The town Sriperumbudur was earlier known as Bhootapuri after the lord. Bhootapurishwarar means Bhoota – Ghosts, Puri – Place and Eshwar – Lord. The lord of Bhootas and Ganas. The ancient names of this deity, as given in the inscriptions are Bhutishvarat-Azhvar, Aludaiyar Thirupudishvaram Udaiyar, Udaiyar Thiruppudishvaram-Udaiya Nayanar.
A well compounded temple without a Rajagopuram facing east. Once inside the huge compound, you come in front of the Balipeetham, Dhwaja Sthambam & the Nandi on a mandapam facing the lord through a stilted window. The entrance to the Mukhamandapam is on a raised platform from the south through a outer Mandapam with uniquely decorated pillars. The Mukhamandapam has the Adhikara Nandi facing the lord from the west, flanked by Bhairavar on one side and Surya on the other side towards our right. The Ardhamandapam is on the left hand side of the entrance, and through it sits the Lord in the form of a 3 feet Lingam inside the Garbhagriham.
A manifestation of Lord Shiva as Bhairava is worshipped in this temple and the unique part is the Idol is inside the Mukhamandapa and not in the outer precinct found regularly.
On the precinct are the small shrines of Lord Vinayaka and Lord Karthikeyan with his consorts at the western side ends. The Koshtha Devata’s include Ganesh, Dakhinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Bramha & Durga, with a shrine of Chandikeshwarar.
The beautiful part is the Goddess Soundaryavalli is placed adjacent to the lords sanctum on a different mandapam facing east on the left side of the lord signifying the concept of Uma-Maheshwara. Generally the goddess is in the same mandapam facing south.
The temple has lot of inscriptions and the oldest one dates to the 11th century. Kulothunga Chola seems to have inaugurated the Stone temple, which seems to have passed on to other rulers from the Cholas, the Vijayanagara empire to the Pandyas and the later Nayakars. Based upon the inscriptions it can definitely be presumed that the temple is more than a 1000 years old.
