In the town of Avadi near Chennai is the temple of Mahadev as Vazhavanda VAYULINGESHWARAR ( Vazhavanda = to live) & Devi Parvathi as VIRUTHAMBIGAI.

The Temple has a large compound , without a Rajagopuram. At the southern end of this compound is a raised Garbhagriha in which resides Bhagavan Vayulingeshwarar in a Chaturanga Sannidhi with a Chaturanga Vimana facing East. Bhagavan Shiva acts here as VAYU LINGAM By yrthe guardian of the North -West.
The temple has been remodeled during the current period. The Devi Parvathi (Viruthambigai) Sannidhi which was facing south was relocated facing east on the northern side of the compound.
The precinct also has the Sannidhi of Vinayaka, Murugan, Chandikeshwarar & Mahavishnu in the form of Satyanarayana.
Both the sanctum of Shiva & Parvathi are two celled complex including the Garbhagriha & ardhaMandapam.
The date of the Lingam would predate the temple by about 1000 years. Being part of the Ashthadikapala temples surrounding the Vedapureeshwarar Temple, the temple would have been initiated during the reign of the great CHOLA KULOTHUNGA CHOLA II, (1133 - 1150 CE) about 800 years ago and must have passed through many dynasties.
The Koshta of the Garbhagriha is lined up with Niruddha Ganapathy, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhavar, Bramha & Durga. The Vimanam's of all the sanctum have unique sculpture's. The Temple is neatly maintained and has a timing of upto 10 AM and from 5 PM in the evening.

  Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple - The Navel of Goddess Shakthi. Bhandasura the evil Asura was tormenting Indra and the devas. The devas prayed to Shakti in the form of a Parrot, residing on a Champaka Vriksha (Magnolia Champaka) at Kanchi. MALLIKARJUNESHWAR TEMPLE - KOTTAI KOVIL - DHARMAPURI - TAMILNADU Vishnu, Mahadev and Brahma on a panel. Arjuna did penance to Lord Shiva,for acquiring heavenly weapons including the Pasupathartha, for fighting the Kurukshetra war.
