Lord Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanathar or Vaitheeswaran meaning the "God of healing" and it is believed that prayers to Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases.

Vaitheeswaran is a Tamil derivative from vaidya (Doctor) and Ishvara (God/Master). The presiding deity is Sri vaidyanathan. He is the God of Healing. When pronouncing in Tamil, it sounds like "vaideeswaran". It is one of the nine Navagraha (nine planets) temples in Chennai( Thondai Mandalam) and is associated with the planet
Mars (Angarakan). Sevvai in Tamil.
One of the nine planets, Angaraka (Mars), suffered from leprosy and was cured by Vaidhyanathaswamy and from then on it is treated as one of the Navagraha Temple for planet Angaraka.

The stoned temple is around 1000 years old and dates to the Cholas. However the upkeep and extensions have been done by Pallavas,Cholas, Vijayanagara kings.
The Rajagopuram of the temple is on the Northern side with a 3 tiered gopuram on the Mukhadwaram. The left and right side of the inside part of the Mukhadwaram is sculptured, which resembles the Shiva Puranam from Sati devi to Meenakshi Marriages to lord shiva. On entering, you come on to a huge square compound and moving towards the east you find a small gopuram again three tiered, beyond which is the Temple Tank. The temple pond is known as Vinay Theertha Kulam. Exactly opposite to this is the Bali peetham Dhwaja Sthambam, and the Nandi mandapam. The Nandi is called Vishnu Nandi. Beyond this is the Mukha Mandapam with pillars, which has very intricately carved frescos of Gods, including Ekpadamurthy, Narasimha coming out of a Lingam, Nataraja Thandavam, Kali in a unique frock(Pavadai), Kannappar placing his leg on the lingam to pinpoint the eye of the lord, Markandeya being saved by the lord from Yama, There are many frescos of Vishnu in this Temple.
In the sanctum the lord, Vaitheeswarar or Vaithiyanathar is facing east & his Consort Thaiyal Nayagi is facing south. Just outside the sanctum, is the foot print of Angarakan, Mars below a Panai Maram, Palm tree, sculpted on stone. The Sthala Vrikhsam is also the Palm Tree.
Bhagavan Aadi Shankar has installed 3 Shree Chakrams in the temple.
