WHY IS MAHAVISHNU CALLED MADHAVA?
MADHAVA - TUSHTI
LEGENDRishi Durvasa acquired a garland of flowers from a nymph, and gave it to Indra who he thought as the most deserving. Indra placed the garland on the head of his mount Airavata the four tusked white elephant 🐘. The Ambrosia in the flowers attracted bees, which disturbed Airavata who picked the garland, threw it on the ground and trampled on it.
Durvasa enraged by the audacity of Indra to defile his gift, cursed Indra that, he will loose his zenith as Lakshmi will leave him.
The plight of the gods became worst as Lakshmi had left them.
On the suggestion of Mahavishnu, the Devas and Asura's took the herculean task to churn Sagara with the help of Mount Mandara as an axle and Vasuki, the king of snakes 🐍 as the rope.
Apart from Nectar(Amrit), lots of things like Kalpavriksha, Kamadhenu, Haalahala (Poison) and MAHALAKSHMI came out of the Ocean.
It was MahaLakshmi who chose Mahavishnu as her concert.MADHAVA
Adi Shankara in his commentary on the Vishnu Sahasranama defines Madhava as DHAVA(Consort) of MA or MAHALAKSHMI or "Mother of the Universe" otherwise known as LAKSHMIPATHI. It also means the Lord of MA or Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
The Harivamsa states that MA stands for transcedental Knowledge and DHAVA means Lord.
The Mahabharata describes Madhava as the attainer of Madhu-Vidya by practicing Ma-Mauna,Dha-Dhyana and Va-Yoga.
The word Madhava is a derivative from the Sanskrit word Madhu which means Honey. It is an adjective defining anything related to honey or sweetness.
The word Madhava describes a person who belongs to the Madhu clan, just like Raghava,Yadava,Kaurava as people from the kula of Raghu,Yadu & Kuru respectively.
In Yadava Kula, nine generations before Shri Krishna, was a great King called Madhu & hence he is known as Madhava from the kula of Madhu." Madhukule jatavat Madhavah".
