VISHNU - KESHAVA

WHY IS MAHAVISHNU CALLED KESHAVA?
KESHAVA - KIRTI

LEGEND Kamsa the evil King of Mathura and the maternal uncle of Shri Krishna, wanted to kill krishna, because the prophecy had predicted that Shri Krishna is destined to kill Kamsa. In order to avoid his own death, Kamsa had sent demons like Putana the Rakshasi,Vyoma, Arishtha the bull, etc to Gokul to kill Sri Krishna. After Shri Krishna kills the Bull-demon Arishtha, Sage Narada informs Kamsa that, the girl child he killed was the daughter of Yashoda and it is infact Krishna who is the son of Devaki. Infuriated, with this knowledge Kamsa orders the Horse-demon Keshi to kill Krishna and Balarama.

The Bhagavat Purana, Vishnu Purana and Harivamsa tells the tale of killing Keshi the evil Horse-demon. Keshi is derived from the word Kesin meaning long haired. Keshi the horse-demon was a powerful Asura. He creates havoc in all the three worlds with his hoofs and long mane. His neighing disturbs the prapancham with its inauspicious sound. Shri Krishna in the dual with Keshi, holds his two legs and throws him away. Infuriated Keshi charges upon Krishna, who puts his folded left arm into the mouth of Keshi and chokes him to death. Hence Mahavishnu is called KESHAVA "the killer of Keshi". According to the Padma Purana, Keshava refers to the long beautiful hairs of Shri Krishna. Keshighat in Vrindavan, along the river Yamuna is supposed to be the place where Shri Krishna slayed Keshi the horse-demon. The Vishnu Sahasranama call Vishnu as Kesava & Keshitha thrice. In the Bhagavad Geeta Arjuna calls Shri Krishna as Keshava ( the Killar of Keshi) many times. ICONOGRAPHY TWENTY-FOUR IMAGES OF VISHNU. There are twenty-four images of Mahavishnu as per RUPAMANDANA and are very much alike ; they are all standing figures, with no bends in the body, possessing four arms, and adorned with the Kirita-crown and other ornaments ; each of them stands upon a Padmasana.
