SWETHARANYESHWARAR TEMPLE - BUDHAN ( MERCURY) - TIRUVENKADAM

Swetharanyeswarar Temple – Tiruvenkadam, Budhan (Mercury)

Swetharanyeswarar Temple  is a Hindu temple located in the town of Thiruvenkadam near Sirkazhi. The main deity is Swetharanyeswarar, Shiva in the form of a lingam and Brahmavidya Ambal as the consort. There is a separate Sannidhi for Budhan(Mercury). Swetha (White) Aranya (forest) Eswara (Lord). The lord of white flower forest.

This temple is especially known for its unique incarnation of Shiva called "Agora Murthi" or Rudra.

Thiruvenkadu village is also famous for its unique structure of pools in the temples. This temple has 3 pools, 3 Gods.

Swetharanyeswarar is the main God in this temple. It is said that Agora Murthi is an incarnation of fury of Lord Shiva (Rudra murthi). There was a demon named "Maruthuvasuran" in Thiruvengadu. He meditated on Lord Bramha for power’s. Pleased with his devotion Lord Bramha offered him super powers. The asura used the powers for evil by torturing  the saints and innocent people. Not able to bear the evil, saints and people prayed to Lord Shiva for redemption. Lord Shiva took his incarnation of 'Agora murthi' and killed Maruthuvasuran under a tree (which is now in Thiruvengadu temple, behind the entrance of Agora murthi).

From the inscriptions in the temple, it is clear that the Chola kings Aditya Chola and Rajaraja Chola made a lot of contributions to this temple making it predated to the 10th century.

As in Chidambaram, there is also a shrine for Lord Shiva in the form of Nataraja which has gold plated Vimana.

One of the main and important aspects of this temple is the feet (Rudra Padam) of Lord Rudra or Shiva in this temple.

The Mukhadwaram has a 5 tiered Gopuram, entering through which, you come to a huge lawn at the end of which is a Vinayagar Shrine behind which is the Nandi(smiling Nandi with its tongue out) Bali Peetham & Dhwaja Sthambam. On the left is the Agni Teertham. Huge Dwarapalakas & Paintins on the ceiling of a Mandapa greets you behind this point. Post the 1st mandapam, comes the inner precinct in which on a raised platform is the Mukhamandapam, Ardha Mandapam and the Garbhagriha of the Lord. The Mandapams are decorated with Sculptures par excellence. The budhan shrine is in a separate mandapam in the outer prahara.
